Directed Irradiation of Mammalian Cells by Single Charged Particles with a Given Impact Parameter

Abstract
First results of experiments with the minibeam facility, installed at the 1.4 MeV.u-1 beam line at the UNILAC, Darmstadt, are presented. The main aspects of our investigations were to reduce the beam spot size and to optimise the hitting accuracy in order to get a well defined impact parameter. Using this experimental set-up individual mammalian cells can be irradiated with single ions with an accuracy of approx. 1 µm.
