Abstract
Over a period of 15 years, county venereologists have received copies of reports of positive serologic tests for syphilis from expectant mothers, without the patients'' names and addresses. Of 610 such patients, 82% were referred to VD clinics by the county VD social workers and 449 were found to be suffering from syphilis. Fifteen percent of the contacts of these patients, including 3 infants under 1 year of age were found to be syphilitic. Among the advantages of this case findings method are the fact that the attention of the doctor who has drawn the blood is brought to the fact that his patient has a positive STS, delay is avoided by the prompt visit of the social worker, and the social worker is of significant assistance in the medico-social problems which come up when a patient is unexpectedly found to have a positive test.
