Placental Hypertrophy in the Gonadectomized Albino Rat1

Abstract
The influence of various steroids upon placental size in the intact, castrate, and hypophysectomized pregnant rat was studied. Pregnancy maintenance utilizing estrone and progesterone injections resulted in an increase in placental weight, but maintenance of pregnancy with progestagens alone did not. Adequate amounts of Provera, a potent progestational agent, inhibited estrone-induced placental hypertrophy. The presence of the anterior pituitary gland was not necessary for the placental hypertrophy in response to estrogen injection in the castrate, and enlarged placentae could not be induced by estrone administration to the intact pregnant rat.
