Abstract
The screening of a static charge distribution inside and near the surface of a bounded quantum-degenerate electron gas is calculated in the self-consistent Hartree approximation. Special attention is paid to the Friedel-type oscillations of the screening charge density. Going inside the gas from an impurity near the surface, the oscillations are found to be larger than the corresponding oscillations in a homogeneous electron gas. The enhancement is caused by contributions to the oscillations due to electrons forward scattered by the screened potential. Keywords
