THE ISOLATION OF POLIOMYELITIS VIRUS FROM HUMAN EXTRA-NEURAL SOURCES. III. PERSISTENCE OF VIRUS IN STOOLS AFTER ACUTE INFECTION 12

Abstract
Stools from 61 clinical cases of poliomyelitis (46 paralytic and 15 non-paralytic) were taken at intervals up to the 24th week following onset of the disease. The age of the patents was 1-33 yrs. Each specimen was partially purified and concentrated before inoculation into a rhesus monkey. 25 of 36 specimens yielded virus during the 1st and 2d weeks after onset, 1 of 15 during the 9th and 10th weeks, and none thereafter. No correlation between age of patient or severity of disease and positive stool was observed.
