Abstract
Two sets of young rabbits 3-4 weeks old were fed exclusively on cow''s and goat''s milk. All the animals died within several months. Five developed severe anemia, the haemoglobin falling to 25% (Sahli) and the red cells to less than 3,000,000. Loss of weight and of hair, and deformities of bone were observed during the last weeks of life. The intestinal contents were found mixed with blood; there were no ulcers or erosions of the mucous membrane, and the bleeding was evidently caplllary. It is concluded that the milk-anemia was due not only to a decreased building up of haemoglobin, but also to increased blood destruction as indicated by urobili-nuria, and to some extent to the loss of blood from caplllary hemorrhage into the intestine. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
