Spherical accretion on to compact X-ray sources with preheating: no thermal limit for the luminosity

Abstract
The numerical solutions for spherically symmetrical accretion are obtained for the case of the optically thin flow with the X-ray preheating. The asymptotics of the solutions are investigated. It is found that for any efficiencies of the energy release, including those typical for the accretion on to neutron stars, the solutions exist for any luminosity below the Eddington limit. This proves that there is no ‘thermal’ limit of accretion.
