Effect of deprivation level on exploratory behavior in the albino rat.

Abstract

After 210 trials of learning to run a straight runway for sucrose solution, 30 male albino rats were presented a novel blind alley from the side of the wall of the straight runway. Moderately water-deprived Ss (MOD group) entered the novel alley more frequently than highly water-deprived Ss (HI group). The type of entry differed between drive groups; HI Ss made mostly head and shoulder responses, while MOD Ss more frequently entered the novel alley completely. All Ss decreased amount of exploration as they approached the goal. This study supports the hypothesis that amount of exploration is inversely related to drive level.
