Abstract
Recent literature reviewing attempts to modify smoking behavior through the use of hypnosis is outlined, and an approach utilizing only 1 treatment is described. This single session includes: the establishment of a favorable mental set on the part of the patient; a hypnotic induction; ego-enhancing suggestions; specific suggestions directed toward the cessation of smoking; an adaption of the red balloon visualization; and success visualization. Of 75 patients treated by this technique, 45 ceased smoking. Six months after the treatment session, 34 (45%) were still nonsmokers, attesting to the efficacy of the method.
