Abstract
The response of elastoplastic systems of the shear-beam type with up to five degrees-of-freedom is investigated for both pulse-type excitations of the base and for earthquake ground motions. For each input motion and system considered, the maximum deformations of the individual stories of the system are evaluated for a range of natural frequencies and yield levels, and the results are compared with the corresponding deformations produced under elastic conditions of response and also with the results computed for similarly excited single-degree-of-freedom systems. On the basis of these data, the structural properties and the characteristics of the input motion which have a significant effect on the maximum response of the systems are identified, and general concepts and simple approximate procedures are developed for estimating the absolute maximum deformation of an inelastic system from the results of a linear analysis. Keywords
