Abstract
A method of predicting the storm surges in a water body using the normal modes of the basin is described. Such a procedure eliminates the explicit use of a finite difference mesh in space and reduces the prediction equations to a system of ordinary time-dependent equations which can be solved in several ways. Application of the spectral (or normal mode) expansion technique to an ideal case is presented. Keywords
