Impact of nitrogen on the adsorptive capacity of activated charcoal

Abstract
Adsorption isotherms for phenol on activated charcoal at neutral pH and room temperature (23°C) were conducted using the standard bottle‐point technique and a modified method which involves purging the solution with nitrogen to insure exclusion of oxygen. The observed differences in adsorptive capacities between the two techniques were statistically analyzed to be significant. Nitrogen was observed to reduce the capacity of activated charcoal by as much as fifty percent.
