Abstract
Pure-tone audiometry (PTA) is a standardized procedure used to measure detection of quiet tones of varying frequency. The test is commonly used by health-care professionals, such as audiologists, to quantify hearing loss in each ear. It can also provide information on the anatomical site (and sometimes the cause) of the hearing loss. The measurements are also used when prescribing a hearing aid. The procedure is relatively quick and easy to perform but requires a degree of skill on the part of the tester to ensure accuracy and validity of the measurements. The test procedure can be modified for use in preschool children and difficult-to-test populations. This entry discusses the underlying scientific principles of the test, how it is performed, and how the results are displayed ...Keywords
