STUDIES ON BROMINE-OXIDIZABLE SULFUR-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS IN MOLD METABOLISM

Abstract
Penicillium chrysogenum Q176 was grown in a synthetic medium containing S only as magnesium sulfate. The formation of organic S compounds was then traced with particular reference to compounds oxidizable to sulfate by bromine water. It was found that such compounds accounted for 33% of all organic S in the culture filtrate at the time of max. penicillin production. It is known that only compounds similiar to the xanthogenic acids or to thioacetamide are oxidizable in this way. It is suggested that such compounds may be intermediates in the formation of penicillin or may be formed in equilibrium with the S group in penicillin.
