Medical Disorders in Drug Addicts

Abstract
The cases of 200 patients admitted to the Bernstein Institute Medical Inpatient Unit (Beth Israel Medical Center, New York) were analyzed according to epidemiologic, demographic, and diagnostic characteristics. There were 129 men and 71 women; 126 patients were below 30 years of age and the youngest was 15 years old. Sixty-eight patients were white; 82, black; 49, Hispanic; and 1, Oriental. Reasons for admission were the following: acute hepatitis (30.5%), infections (27.5%), detoxification (11.5%), diabetes mellitus (7.5%), pulmonary disease (6.0%), overdose (5.0%), cardiovascular disease (4.0%), gastrointestinal disease (3.5%), and venereal disease (3.5%).Keywords
