Evidence for a Non-Thyroxine Thyroid Factor Which Affects Gastric Function

Abstract
Injn. of histamine in beeswax and mineral oil causes peptic ulceration and death from peritonitis secondary to perforation of the ulcer in guinea pigs. Previous thyroidectomy shortens survival time significantly. Whole thyroid substance is an adequate replacement for the surgically removed gland; crystalline thyroxine is ineffective and, therefore, the gastric factor in whole thyroid is independent of calorigenic activity and of thyroxine. Non-specific operative trauma and parathyroid damage are not responsible for the effect of thyroidectomy on resistance to peptic ulcer, ft is concluded that the thyroid of the guinea pig contains a non-thyroxine factor which exercises a regulatory effect on gastric function.
