Effects of Antibiotics on Apparent Lactate and Volatile Fatty Acid Production: In Vitro Rumen Fermentation Studies

Abstract
A survey was conducted to evaluate the effects of 16 antibiotics on apparent lactate and volatile fatty acid production in an in vitro rumen fermentation system. Several of the antibiotics had no previous record of response in an in vitro rumen fermentation with a mixed microbial population. Reduction of apparent lactate production in a 1 hr fermentation was used as the primary response criterion in this survey. Bacitracin methylene disalicylate, capre-omycin disulfate, novobiocin and oxamycin effectively decreased apparent lactate production while erythromycin, hygromycin B and tylosin tartrate appeared to lower lactate production moderately. In contrast, apramycin, bacitracin, chlortetracycline, iodinin, monensin, the penicillins, streptomycin sulfate and thiram did not decrease lactate production. Apparent volatile fatty acid production was also assessed as an indicator of antibiotic influence on total microbial activity. Generally, total VFA production was reduced by antibiotic treatment.
