Abstract
During the IAU Symposium no. 12 (Varenna, 1960) observations were presented (Leighton, 1960) on two new types of velocity fields in the solar atmosphere: (a) Vertical oscillatory motions on a small scale, with a period of about 5 minutes, and (b) largescale (30 000 km) horizontal flows in a more or less cellular pattern (the ‘supergranulation’).
