Abstract
The salivas from 100 children having used a penicillin dentifrice for 1 yr. were compared with 50 children who had not used penicillin as a dentifrice for the presence of organisms that had become resistant to the antibiotic. In all, there were 814 cultures included in the report. It was observed that the constant use of penicillin increases the percentage of Streptococcus viridans which require .05 unit of penicillin or more to inhibit. It was also observed that there were similar increases in organisms other than the S. viridans which required concns. of 1.0 unit or more of penicillin to inhibit. Not only was there a greater total number of penicillin resistant organisms in the salivas of penicillin users but there was also a greater percentage of individuals having resistant organisms among the constant users of this antibiotic. Keywords
