Abstract
Hookworm, Ascaris and Trichuris egg counts in fecal smears can be standardized by means of a photo-electric light meter adapted for measuring the turbidity of the smear. For making smears that contain various known quantities of feces, the adapted meter can be calibrated as follows: Using analytical methods prepare N/l BaCl2 and 2N Na2SO4 solns., add 0.5 part pure glycerin to each and combine in the proportions 3:2, 2:3, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:6. One-drop smears of the BaSO4 suspensions thus produced have the same turbidities on the microscope slide as fecal smears that contain respectively 1/200, 1/300, 1/400, 1/500 and 1/1000 cc. of formed feces. Keywords
