Abstract
The similarities and differences between the operation of a modulated retarding potential difference and a retarded energy modulated electron spectrometer are described. The energy modulation technique automatically eliminates to a large degree slow variations of the scattering cross section with electron energy as well as the relatively slower variations in electron transmission with electron energy due to electron optical effects. Furthermore, the retarded energy modulation technique gives a response characteristic of a monoenergetic electron beam as does the retarding potential difference technique. In this connection, the electron spectrum of He near 19.3 eV is discussed. Keywords
