Vertical and radial motions in a tropical cyclone

Abstract
The vertical and radial motions associated with a given tangential velocity and temperature distribution corresponding to a tropical cyclone are calculated using a diagnostic equation. The equation is derived by introducing the hydrostatic and gradient wind approximations systematically into the meteorological equations. The computed circulation pattern appears to reproduce most of the important characteristics of a mature cyclone such as the eye and the eyewall. The results also show that the sinking motion in the eye is thermally controlled. DOI: 10.1111/j.2153-3490.1962.tb01352.x
