Domiciliary Consultations—necessary service or anachronistic luxury?

Abstract
Examination of domicilary consultations by consultants within the Northern Region shows that after standardisation by population served, there are wide variations in the rates of domiciliary consultations by specialty and district. The reasons for this variation are unclear but relate to the hospital consultant as supplier of the domiciliary consultation. Over £1 m is spent within the Northern Region on domiciliary consultations and over half the patients seen on domiciliary consultation require hospital services. Therefore, it is suggested that evaluation is required particularly in relation to cost effectiveness and outcome of patient care.
