Ablative acceleration of thin foils driven by thermal power fluxes

Abstract
We have accelerated thin PVC foils by ablating the foil material in an electrothermal shock tube with power fluxes of typically 2 × 104 W/cm2 and 160 μs duration. The measured burn velocity, blow off velocity, and terminal velocity compare well with steady flow hydrodynamic considerations and a simple rocket model.
