Abstract
Despite the vilification of the left, and to the dismay of the academy, Jürgen Habermas remains a Marxist. Yet he is a Marxist who recognizes and publically asserts that Marxism has lost its capacity both to defend its truth claims before the contemporary tribunal of rational discourse and politically to release liberation movements in the advanced industrial world. He has also remained engaged in the struggle against the western intellectual communities' division of knowledge and political decision, which has permitted social science to become so many varieties of social management theory. In his attempts to critically engage the academy while translating its positive achievements into an ongoing self-criticism of Marxism, Habermas presents a model of theoretical praxis which contemporary Marxists could well emulate. Keywords
