Studies on the Transmission of the Infectious Bursal Agent (IBA) of Chickens

Abstract
Studies on transmission of the infectious bursal agent reveal it to be highly contagious and to spread readily by direct contact. Materials from an infected environment were capable of initiating the infection in susceptible chickens, and a contaminated building remained infective for as long as 122 days after infected birds were removed. This indicates unusual longevity in the environment. Specific modes of transmission appear to be by contaminated feed or water, but apparently not through excreta from infected birds nor by air flow from one isolation unit to another.
