Abstract
The variability in fern life cycles and morphologies is surveyed to demonstrate numerous opportunities for experimental and comparative studies on the alternation of generations. Explanations for the ontogenetic control of the alternation of generations in plants are considered in relation to data derived from experimental studies on ferns. Keywords
