Abstract
“There can be no doubt that above all we, as a society and unified scientific community, must first understand the crucial need for genetic resource conservation. Given that, then the natural question becomes where do we go from here? The answer is to first identify needs and then logical priorities and strategies followed by implementation … There is a fundamental need to know what is out there, its character, its usefulness, and how to protect it” ( Wildt 1997 , p. 429–431).
