Abstract
Five records of the fur seal A. tropicalis at South Georgia in 1972 and 1975 are reported, comprising the 1st published records of the species south of the Antarctic Convergence [South Atlantic Ocean]. An antarctic fur seal A. gazella pup tagged at South Georgia was recovered in Tierra del Fuego 8 mo. later, being the 2nd instance of the species north of the Convergence. Both species are capable of movement between actual or potential breeding sites on widely separated oceanic islands, and they are at least locally sympatric. The tag recovery, with other evidence, suggests the possibility that the Scotia Sea stocks of fur seals may undertake a marked winter dispersal or migration analagous to that of birds, whales and other fur seals summering in high latitudes. Fur seals breeding at South Georgia may reach South American coastal waters.
