ROENTGENOLOGIC FEATURES OF UMBILICAL VASCULAR CATHETERIZATION IN THE NEWBORN

Abstract
1. Umbilical vein and artery catheterization has recently become an important procedure in the management of ill neonates with hemolytic disease, respiratory distress, idiopathic hyperbilirubinemia, and hypoglycemia. 2. Fortunately, complications related to these catheters are uncommon. 3. Proper catheter position appears to be an important factor in preventing the development of coincident complications. 4. With an understanding of the anatomy of the neonatal circulation, the radiologist can perform an important service by helping the neonatologist obtain proper catheter placement.
