Abstract
Whether the muscular strength of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can be improved through resistance exercise has yet to be established. The effect of isometric strength training on patients with motor neuron disease has been reported, but the type of motor neuron disease affecting the patients was not specified. Lenman trained the elbow flexor and extensor muscle groups of six patients with various degrees of muscle weakness resulting from motor neuron disease.1 The patients participated in 11 to 21 training sessions during which they all performed 30 isometric contractions. One patient performed isotonic elbow flexion exercises as well. The duration of individual isometric contractions and of the training program as well as the frequency of training were not specified in Lenman's report.
