Abstract
Anthracnose disease was assessed in populations of five cowpea cultivars: Farin Juda‐C, Ife Brown, Market Brown, IT82E‐60 and TVX 3236. Disease progress was estimated by weekly measurements of the length of necrotic lesions on stems as well as by a visual symptom assessment key. Direct significant correlations were obtained between visual assessment scores and the lengths of peduncle lesions in three comparisons using cultivars of varying susceptibility. In addition, the response of hypocotyls excised from the seedlings of these cultivars corresponded with adult plant reactions to Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to currently available information on other anthracnose diseases.
