Abstract
Due to the growing demand for high currents of highly charged heavy ions the potential of laser ion sources is investigated at CERN. A test facility consisting of a 50‐J carbon dioxide laser, a versatile ion production chamber, and electrostatic and magnetic analyzing systems has recently been put into operation. First results of charge state analysis as well as plasma temperaturemeasurements are presented. Keywords
