The Pleurotus Ostreatus-Sapidus Species Complex

Abstract
SUMMARY Two macroscopically indistinguishable, noninterbreeding populations of edible oyster mushrooms were studied. These were determined to be Pleurotos ostreatus which was found only on Populus tremuloides and had a cream-colored spore print, slightly larger basidiospores, and a growth rate on nutrient agar about half that of the other population, P. sapidus. The latter species had a lilac spore print and a wide host range of angiosperm trees.
