Abstract
The imperfect form-sp. Microsporum gypseum (Bodin) Guiart et Grigorakis is shown to be the conidial stage of Nannizzia incurvata Stockd. and Gymnoascus gypseum Nannizzi emend. Griffin. These 2 spp. are cross-incompatible. All 23 strains studied are heterothallic. Compatibility in each sp. is controlled by a single locus with 2 alleles (A, a). Accessory factors inhibiting fertility appear to be present in G. gypseum, since not all AX a crosses produced fertile cleistothecia. This study supports the transfer of G. gypseum to the genus Nannizzia as Nannizzia gypsea (Nann.) Stockd. Certain agar media containing powdered hair were found to support cleistothecial formation by N. incurvata and N. gypsea. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
