Some numerical experiments with DIFSUB

Abstract
One of the best general purpose differential equation solvers is Gear's variable order, variable step Adams code DIFSUB [1]. (It is combined with methods for the solution of stiff problems but we are only concerned with the Adams methods here.) We have done extensive numerical testing of the code, which complement the excellent comparative tests of Hull and his co-workers [2], in order to understand its design and performance. We shall report some of our observations in the hope that others will find them useful.
