Abstract
Stem rust of wheat was common in eastern and central Manitoba by mid-July but it did not develop rapidly and caused no crop damage except to Norstar hard red winter wheat in Manitoba. It was also common in parts of Ontario and Quebec. Race identification of field and nursery isolates was conducted using 16 single-gene wheat lines. Twelve virulence combinations, including four new ones, were identified but none of these was virulent on the commercial spring wheats grown in the rust area of the Prairies. Race C53, predominant since 1977, comprised 86% of all isolates and was the dominant race in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. Race C4 predominated in British Columbia and Alberta. No virulence was identified on wheat lines with genes Sr6, Sr22,Sr24,Sr26,Sr27,Sr29,Sr30,Sr37 or on commercial spring cultivars grown in the eastern Prairies. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
