Abstract
Metaphors selected from fifth grade readers were presented to 80 upper socio-economic status grade six and grade eight children. A descriptive interpretation of responses from the highest and lowest scoring protocols within a Piagetian framework suggested that the poorest interpretations showed characteristics of concrete and pre-operational thinking while the best interpretations showed characteristics of formal operational thought. Keywords
