Residual Stresses in Gas Turbine Engine Components From Barkhausen Noise Analysis

Abstract
The Barkhausen noise analysis method for nondestructive residual stress measurement in ferromagnetic steels is described. Photographs showing the influence of stress on magnetic domain walls are presented; qualitative and quantitative calibration results are summarized. Results of exploratory measurements on a variety of jet engine components: compressor blades, compressor disks, diffuser cases and ball bearings, are presented and discussed.
