Abstract
Three experiments were conducted with rumen-fistulated Hereford steers fed all-concentrate diets in drylot with no bedding. Water containing NaHCO3 offered free choice together with untreated water was consumed in quantities equivalent to 10-day intakes of from 38 to 1852 gm. of NaHCO3 per steer among the different diets. After correction for temperature effects, significant (P<.05) differences in NaHCO3 intake occurred among the diets. In experiment 1, the lowest intake occurred on a diet which contained added NaHCO3; in experiment 2, the lowest intake occurred on a diet in which urea was the sole source of supplemental nitrogen; and in experiment 3, the lowest intake occurred on a diet which contained 5% molasses.
