Abstract
Conditions for the optimum production of positive ions and their complete removal from the ionization region to form a beam are developed. The calculations take into account the variation in ionization cross section as a function of electron energy. The mechanism of proton production is considered and the efficiency of arc type sources is discussed. Keywords
