Abstract
Literature on the nest population in the Vespidae is reviewed and an account is given of the population of a large nest of V. maculata. The nest contained 5 combs of cells, the individual cells numbering 3,195; the total population consisted of 402 individuals. In the pupal stage, the number of [male][male] exceeded the number of [female][female]. In the adult population, queens and drones exceeded the workers in number. The immature hornets were found chiefly in the cells of the first combs. Four foreign insects, presumably accidental invaders, or carried in as prey, were found in the nest. The nest, as an organized society, had already undergone considerable disintegration with the approach of cold weather. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
