Abstract
Concern and commitment for developing students’ higher order thinking or problem-solving abilities have increased as greater consideration has been given to the importance of subject matter and the social context for learning. Not only can computers be used directly as problem-solving tools, but applications software also can be used more effectively for teaching the concepts essential for recognizing and solving problems. This article evaluates spreadsheet software that teaches quantitative business concepts through macro-driven drills. Because this software provides students with cognitive support by eliminating problem setup and calculation, it is judged to be operating as a “cognitive enhancer, ” permitting students to focus on complex concepts. Keywords
