Photoemission and Electron Detachment in Low-Energy Collisions of Metastable Atoms with Negative Ions

Abstract
Cross sections for Penning detachment, X*+YX+Y+e, and collision-induced photon emission, X*+YX+Y+hν have been calculated for collisions of metastable neutral atoms and negative ions at low energies (E1 eV). A semiclassical treatment based on the impact parameter method and adiabatic electronic interactions was employed. Collisions involving H* (2S1), Ca* (3D1), and He* (2S1) with H, O, Cl, and C were investigated. In all collisions not involving H* (2S1), Penning detachment predominates and exhibits cross sections on the order of 1014 cm2.
