Abstract
This article discusses a number of recent observational studies of school administrators' work patterns. These studies are criticized for the inadequacy of the Tayloristic "time and motion" assumptions exhibited in their discourse. An alternate approach is outlined for analyzing the administrative life-world. It is derivedfrom Boswell's "intimate acquaintance" with Dr. Johnson. Keywords
