Dynamics of an isolated power system supplied from diesel and wind

Abstract
To investigate the feasibility of 100% wind penetration in diesel-wind power supplied isolated networks, a computer simulation program was developed. To maximise wind-power contribution, the steady-state operating conditions are optimised within the limits imposed by engineering constraints and voltage and frequency deviations. The dynamics of the system are simulated and a control policy is developed to minimise frequency and voltage disturbances due to wind turbulence and gusts and load demand fluctuations. An eigenvalue analysis followed by the participation-matrix technique is applied to identify weak points in the stability of the system. Finally, results of the simulated system behaviour under various wind conditions are presented. It is shown that, with the power system simulated and the control policy developed, acceptable performance is achieved with 100% wind energy penetration
