Communication. Visual observation of shock waves in an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry expansion stage

Abstract
This paper is intended to complement that of Lim et al. which also appears in this issue (p. 365) by displaying photographs of the shock wave pattern developed in the expansion stage of an operating ICP-MS system. The dependence of the pattern, and therefore the required dimensional parameters of the stage, on the operating pressure is demonstrated and some conclusions are drawn on points requiring operator care.
