Alteration of Activity of Thyroid Gland of Beef Cattle with Testosterone.

Abstract
Weekly intramusc. injns. of 1 mg. of testosterone/kg., into beef heifer and steer calves from 500-800 pounds live wt., increased avg. daily gain in wt. and decreased feed requirements per unit of gain. The wts. of the thyroid glands were increased, thyroid colloid reduced, and the epithelial cells became tall columnar. The high secretory activity was associated with a low thyroxine content. Possibly the increased rate of gain after testosterone is partly mediated by the thyroid. Thyroxine content was estimated using the time for asphyxiation of thiouracil-treated mice.
