ELECTRON‐MICROSCOPE OBSERVATIONS OF IRON OXIDES IN SOME RED SOILS

Abstract
Summary: Electron‐microscope studies of the clay fractions of red soils have shown that free iron oxides are present as small (50–100 A diam) discrete particles frequently clustered to form larger irregular aggregates. Although no evidence of iron‐oxide coatings on clay minerals was found, an association of some of the oxide particles with the edges, but not the faces of kaolinite plates was observed.
