Abstract
Cicisbeism, as a 1 egitimate sexual alliance between a woman and a man who is not her husband, is normative among the Birom of northern Nigeria. Women have considerable latitude in choosing their cicisbeos and perceive the relationship as a means of enhancing their economic security. Resultant ties to a number of men accord Birom women an instrumental role in mediating between kin groups and in determining leadership positions in the society.
